Marc Jacocs goes The Virgin Suicides

After directing Daisyfor her good friend Marc Jacobs, Sofia Coppola is back into business with her designer friend for the campaign of Daisy Dream and if the previous ad evoked some 'The Virgin Suicides' feels, this new one is totally an homage to her own debut movie.

In one of the most iconic scenes of the movie, the boys obsessed with the Lisbon sisters try to imagine the secret world of the girls while reading Cecilia's diary, Air is sounding and everything is dreamy, and that's kinda what Coppola tried to do with this new ad. Daisy Dream is not as enchanting or ethereal as the movie, but it's lovely too and sells the product well. So below you can watch the new and 'The Virgin Suicides' scene for comparison, and i couldn't help but to post after the cut a few stills of that scene, i love the dreamy, free-spirited mood so enjoy the magic and enigmatic world of the Lisbon girls after the cut.

Palo Alto (2013)

(Spoiler free)
I was really looking forward to watch 'Palo Alto', Gia Coppola's directing debut based on a book of short stories by James Franco (not too keen on this last thing, though).

The trailer, as it was everything that i had seen from the movie, showed a very similar style to her aunt Sofia Coppola, beautiful shots, girls hanging their heads through a car's open window, all very Sofia-esque. Which i adore, but that didn't say much about Gia Coppola as a director. But let me tell you that, even though she has inherited lots of similar things from her, Gia Coppola is definitely something else.

It's easy to compare them, the film it's beautifully shot, the use of music is on point and the style is somehow alike but that's pretty much it. Whereas Sofia creates a more dreamy, gloomy world, Gia is more accurate in depicting reality. Not that Sofia doesn't make it, she embellishes it and i adore that, but Gia goes straight to the core of things.

Gia Coppola gets into the world of accommodated highschool students and really achieves to create that environment, the intimacy they have on their bedrooms, the boredom they experience, the absurdity of their actions like getting arrested just because you've seen the girl you like kiss someone else. It's like a secret camera into the world of these group of young people and she really achieves that. It really reminded me to The Teenage Gaze by Petra Collins, it has that whole mood and both really achieve what it is to be a teenager.

On the other hand, the story is just fine, somehow it leaves you expecting that something is going to happen but just as life itself, and especially in that age, everything is boring and not much happens aside from small victories by oneself; like finally admitting you have a crush on someone or leaving friends behind. Some have compared Gia's work with Larry Clark's 'Kids' or to Gus Van Sant, i wouldn't go that far, but she's definitely creating her own signature style and being a Coppola that's not easy.

About the cast, Emma Roberts proves again that no matter the haters, she really can give solid performances, Jack Kilmer is really a surprise and i totally liked Zoe Levin, who could be a true Sofia Coppola girl and reminded me to 'The Virgin Suicides', i think i liked her character the best.

Many will find the movie boring and with no substance, but i definitely liked it though maybe, just maybe, i expected a little bit more from the ending. But if you're a Sofia Coppola lover or are into small stories with a lot behind, you have to definitely watch it.

Also, the soundtrack is really good and i can't stop listening to this version of Blood Orange's 'Champagne Coast', i'm playing it non stop so enjoy the song, see some beautiful stills from the movie that i adored behind the cut, and give Gia Coppola a try because she's not the new Sofia, she's another talented Coppola in the making:

Elle Fanning by Craig McDean for Interview Magazine

Since i was without a computer for a few months i haven't been able to post much, and i have a few things left behind that i wanted to post even though on internet standards, are old now. Like this photoshoot of Craig McDean with Elle Fanning for Interview Magazine May 2014.

Elle Fanning is gorgeous, there's no question about that, but apart from delivering solid performances and having a very good eye choosing her roles, she seems to be super lovely and charming, and a girl her age (she's only 16); and while other starlets her age look like 25 and act like they're that old (Chloe Moretz or Kylie Jenner to name a few), Elle, despite being as tall as a model, looks and acts like a regular teenager and i love that. And she looks great and age appropriate in this shoot, a little bit sexy but not too much, cool and innocent with that angel face she has, i loved these pics and i'm posting them just because.

Let's hope Elle Fanning never changes. Like ever.

'Short Term 12'

I watched 'Short Term 12' ('Las vidas de Grace') some time ago, and i wish i have talked about it here but i simply couldn't, i don't think i could express all the feelings that this movie contains. Because it has them all.

Centered in a group home for troubled teenagers and starring Brie Larson as a young supervisor, this may be, alongside 'Her', the best movie i watched last year. And it's so incredibly underrated.

In this scene, we see Marcus, a boy who's about to turn 18 and be left all by himself on the streets, expressing all of that on this rap song he has composed, which also includes all the pain that has brought him there. And it's painful as hell, and you can feel that. The great achievement of the movie is precisely that, that it has no band aid and things are what they are, as tough as they may be, but real.

I can't recommend this movie more, you will fall in love with Brie Larson if you haven't already and with the rest of the cast because everyone is fantastic on it. Enjoy the rap scene below and watch this movie because it's worth it, but keep in mind that it will touch you to the core without noticing.

Fall fashions in classic movies

This is something genius, photographer Bobby Doherty has included this season's runway items into some classic movies' stills and the contrast is really great.

From Oz's red shoes turning into Saint Laurent boots or Marie Anoitnette dressing Dior, these pictures are really fantastic and proving that fashion is ageless and iconic movies can follow today's trends. I've posted a few below but be sure to check out many more at the source.

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' in Erdem and Givenchy.

Diane Keaton in 'Annie Hall' in Saint Laurent.

Kirsten Dunst in 'Marie Antoinette' dressing Dior.

Faye Dunaway in 'Bonnie & Clyde' in Miu Miu.

Meryl Streep in 'Kramer vs. Kramer' in Burberry Prorsum.

Gwyneth Paltrow in 'The Royal Tenembaums' in a Valentino coat & Hermès bag.

Brigitte Bardot in 'Comptent' in Chanel.

Anne Bancroft in 'The Graduate' in Brian Atwood heels.

My So-Called Life (1994)

My most favourite show 'My So-Called Life', premiered 20 years ago this week, and how was i not going to talk about it? Seriously, i watched it back then and it rocked my world, such a good show about adolescence, so truthful to reality it hurt, and to this day, no other show has achieved that.

It was unfairly cancelled after its first season but it received so many fan letters asking to bring it back that they nearly got it around for a second season but Claire Danes had already signed to star in 'Romeo + Juliet' and the filming never happened. But anyway, one season and the show remains ageless and iconic to those who have watched it and i had to, of course, dedicate a post about it.

After the cut i posted some stills that i liked, i couldn't find many from Ricky (probably my fave character from the show) and it's a shame, but you can watch one scene that it's pure bliss and that i loved from him here and if you haven't watched this show, please do, it will still get you even if you have left your teenage years behind, as it happened to me when i rewatched it a few years ago. Beware because you will end up obsessed with Jordan Catalano:

'True Blood' (2008- 2014)

'True Blood' had its season finale last week, and while this season was not disappointing at all compared to the previous ones, the finale did suck.

I expected so much more than a happy ending for practically them all (fuck Bill), with a wedding (so unnecessary) and everything was quite forgettable. Because who cared at this point about Sookie and Bill, they were always the most boring thing on the show, and it's Sookie and Eric who should had been endgame. They never really gave it a try (he had amnesia back then when they were together) and that's really a shame.

But this show has had great moments. Still, to this day, and even though the show might have been a let down for many, it has one of my favourite scenes on a show, the suicide of a vampire. Who could forget Godric's death on season 2, it was so majestic, poetic and touching that it's no worth talking about 'True Blood' without discussing that flawless scene. So watch it here (couldn't embed vid) and as usual enjoy some of the coolest moments the show has had after the cut, i know i'm missing a lot of them but it's what i could find, and also some flawless ads promoting the show (they had the best promos). We know we are all glad this hot mess ended but we'll be missing Pam, Lafayette, Ginger, Eric... but definately not Sam. Enjoy!

"If you need me whistle"

The loss of Lauren Bacall the other week means that there are nearly no actors from Hollywood's Golden Era left. She was the latest super star, the last one holding all that glamour that it's so rare to find nowadays in other thespians.

And, one cannot remember Bacall without referring to one of Hollywood's biggest love stories, hers and Humphrey Bogart's romance. They have to be my favourite love story back then, and this photoshoot taken by Martin Weiser for the film 'To Have and Have Not' really shows their chemistry together. They had barely just met for this movie and you can tell how in love they already were.

So i'm posting below the shoot to remember this iconic couple and their famous movie quote "If you need me whistle", (Bogart gave a whistle as a present to Bacall as a wink during the filming of that movie and when he passed away, he was buried with it), i bet she did whistle when she passed away.

Leighton Meester's Heartstrings

It seems that Leighton Meester is finally releasing her album, i'm saying finally because it's been years since she's been talking about it, but nothing ever came out. She released a few singles from time to time, some collabs and played some gigs there and there, but now she has released the first single 'Heartstrings' from a new album coming out in October 28th with the same title and the song is simply fantastic.

I've always liked the sweetness of Leighton's voice and this song is really making me have great expectations about this album, it sounds really melodic and personal, and different from what she's done before; she released some pop tunes like the 'Good Girls Go Bad' with Cobra Starship or the single 'Your Love's a Drug', but both didn't sound like her compared to her first released solo track 'Birthday', which is super catchy and not your average pop song, so let's hope the album goes in that direction.

So take a listen to Leighton's new song 'Heartstrings'here or below and also to 'Birthday' because it's totally my jam. More beautiful music from Leigh Leigh on the way!

Top 10 Garbage songs

Garbage have surprisingly teased with new music on their website and it seems that a new album is coming, which is super good news. It's true that their latest two albums 'Bleed Like Me' and 'Not Your Kind of People' were not as superb as their debut, 'Version 2.0.' and the underrated 'Beautiful Garbage' but one can only hope. Also, Garbage's lyrics always get me to the core and i love these weirdos so new music is more than welcome and i'm already excited about it.

So, ahead of this upcoming release i'm doing the unbelievable difficult task for me to try to make a Top 10 but, i'm gonna do two different top 10s because Garbage has super powerful songs and awesome ballads, so two lists for them. I haven't included b-sides because they're so awesome i might do another top 10 some day for them but i have included covers this time.

Go ahead to garbage.com to get teased and enjoy both top 10s with some of my favourite lyrics after the cut!

1. Only Happy When It Rains
I'm riding high upon a deep depression

Summer is gone. That's kinda upsetting for me because i love Summer so much. It cheers me up, the feeling of being on holidays even though you have to work and the never ending nights. This Summer has been quite special because of a certain someone, as well as it's been pretty filled with plans, and i absolutely loved it.

There's no Summer without music and without tons of photos to capture moments so i'm doing that below as a reminder of one of the best Summers i had in years. Summer forever, i wish.

'Aspirational' and a surprise music video by Spike Jonze

There are two videos that caught my attention last week and i want to show them to you, it didn't hurt that they contain two of my favourite girls and also a really great director:

First, there's the 'Aspirational' short film, directed by Matthew Frost and starring Kirsten Dunst which is simply genius. It might me a simple idea but this is definitely happening nowadays with the use of cellphones and the importance we give to a simple 'Like' (or the quantity of them). Where the picture was taken, why or with whom doesn't matter anymore, people are hungry for likes and we've lost all the meaning of taking a photograph.

And also, i'm posting the surprise video Spike Jonze has filmed for Karen O with the ultra charming Elle Fanning and it's also a really simple vid but Elle is so lovely and cute that she makes everything better,. Please never grow up Elle Fanning:

'Broad City'

How can i explain 'Broad City'? I wouldn't have known from this show if it wasn't for tumblr, absolutely everyone and everybody was reblogging stuff like mad and it looked pretty funny. And it definitely is.

There are only 10 episodes (such a shame) but are so hilarious that it will take you a few eps - it took me 2, to really get their humour, but it's really worth it. Ilana and Abby are such weirdos and such losers that they're definitely my people and i can't wait to watch more from them (second season in January, i heard). Trust me you won't regret watching them and as i can't describe how this show is like, click below for some hilarious stills from this flawless first season, let's hope its creators -the protagonists themselves, can live up to the hype.

Bonus clip from the show, this was so good i couldn't even:

Art and beauty should belong to the people

Something Moscow has very well hidden, and it might be a gorgeous surprise to many tourists, is how beautiful are the metro stations there.

It was built during the Soviet era and based on the idea that "art and beauty should belong to the people rather than only being available in the houses of nobles" and it's really a brilliant idea. Because metro stations usually are ugly and dirty and these ones look like museums you can admire whenever you want to. It must be gorgeous to go to work every day looking at these astonishing aisles so admire this hidden beauty and one can only hope to see it with my very own eyes if i travel to Moscow one day. More behind the cut.

'Mean Girls' reunion on EW

$

OMG, this is so important news. This should have happened on October 3rd to be more fetch, but anyway, this is something fantastic.

This movie became an instant teen flick classic and to this day, the true heir of 'Heathers' and 'Clueless' has not yet been dethroned. Which is sad because there are so many good girlie movies out there but somehow the formula highschool-mean girls-drama doesn't work out. At least for now. But anyway, we'll always have those three movies to do an excellent chick flick marathon and i'm going to attempt to make a top 6 of other chick flicks to keep into consideration (i'm sorry, but no 'Pitch Perfect' or 'Bring It On', never liked them), be sure to check out the reunion interview these ladies had with EW and find out where Regina George would be after 10 years (so accurate):

1. Never Been Kissed
2. Drop Dead Gorgeous
3. Easy A
4. Wildchild
5. Pretty Persuasion
6. Sugar & Spice

I'm so behind on so many things with the blog it's not even funny but there's always time to catch up. Like these amazing and intimate portraits taken by Benoit Peverelli of some actors and directors during the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. I always like behind the scenes photos the best and the Swiss photographer really captures than hidden glamour real stars have even when no one's watching, or at least it looks like so.

There are some more at the source with Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska or Amber Heard but below i posted the ones that really have caught my attention and were kinda intriguing. Behind the scenes of glamour at the Cannes Film Festival.

Lifetime's Aaliyah's and TLC's biopic movies

$

0
Controversy has followed both TLC's and Aaliyah's biopics made by Lifetime, especially the latter one, and to be honest these films doesn't do them justice.

First of all, the little use of their music which is a key element of their careers. I have no clue if the artists' themselves, or family members when it comes to Aaliyah, or perhaps their music labels, denied them to get full access to their tracks but that's something that was truly missed. Also, the failure of having the actresses who portrayed these four ladies sing their songs instead of the original songs, which may be connected to the previous thing i pointed here. And finally, the lack of quality of both movies, they were mediocre at best and the performances were not strikingly good, though not bad either.

Now, after watching them, i think both biopics were pretty avoidable, i know i watched them out of curiosity as so many other people, but i don't think it treated their protagonists fairly, especially in Aaliyah's case.

Anyway, we'll always have VH1's Behind the Music specials to check out a more accurate look into both acts' careers and their personals lives, and they even threw some shade to the Aaliyah biopic (below). Up next there's the En Vogue Christmas special but i think i'm off this mess of a train.

Tim Walker always does amazing photoshoots, he always makes a difference, so when he shot Tilda Swinton for W Magazine at the home and museum of art collectors Dominique and John de Menil, it was anything but ordinary.

Not only does Tilda Swinton look outlandish and like she doesn't below to this world but the whole shoot is really fantastic, all that surrounded by a vast collection in which she serves as another work of art.

I've posted part of the photoshoot below but be sure to check out the rest at the source and get into Tim Walker's strange world.

Leighton Meester's debut album 'Heartstrings'

This is the album you should be talking about right now and not a catchy pop album that will be forgotten by next year. I don't know though if 'Heartstrings', Leighton Meester's first album, will sell a lot of copies or make it onto music history (i doubt that), but i'm sure it will become very dear to those who give it a try and like sweet, smooth, melodic songs. Because Leighton's first album is something that even though it doesn't contain an original sound, the lyrics and her sweet, sweet voice –she's almost like whispering sometimes, will take you places.

I've been listening to this album non stop, you can stream it online here but below i posted some of my favourite tracks –'Runaway' is definitely my favourite from the album besides the song that gives the album its name, so take a listen because this is good material.

The Virgin Suicides by Krzysztof Wyzynski

It's no secret that i love anything Sofia Coppola and anything inspired by her work. So, this photoshoot by Krzysztof Wyzynski for U Magazine in 2013 wouldn't be an exception.

The formula is simple, five girls chained to a tree or with saint stamps and bandaged wrists but even though it's a nice try it lacks the dark mood of the book and that's a key element when portraying the Lisbon sisters. I have still yet to make a post with my favourite lines from Jeffrey Eugenides' book, and there are so many as it's one of my favourite books, but in the meantime check out the rest of the photoshoot after the cut.
